‘Will you love me forever?’ I whispered as quietly as I could.
He smiled and took my hands in his. Without hesitating, under the lights of the fireworks in the night sky, he answered. ‘Always.’
I ran to catch the last bus for the day. When I got on it, I had to take a moment to start breathing normally again. When I wasn’t shaking as bad, I took a seat next to an old woman, which had burried her head in the newspaper. I put my hand in the pocket of my jacket and took out my phone. I opened my message box. Empty. I opened my missed calls. Empty. I sighed. What was happening with him these days? I knew something was up a few months ago when he started disappearing and not answering my texts and calls. I was really woried about him. And about me because…well, my heart was breaking more and more with every day and every message he ignored.
The person I was talking about was Kim Taehyung. The goofy, cute member of the popular kpop group Bangtan Boys. He had been my boyfriend for the past two years and until a few months ago we were happy and inlove and everything was like a dream. My life was complete. Tae was the one to welcome me home after a long day at work. He was the one to cook dinner, or at least try his hardest because we both knew he was really bad at it.
Even with all of his flaws I was happy to eat ramyun everyday just so I could look at him and call him mine.
I didn’t realize that my eyes started getting teary until the old lady next to me asked me what was wrong. I brushed her away, telling her I was just cold, but then, when I looked at her for a moment, she was staring at me with understanding eyes.
'You think he’s cheating, don’t you?’ She asked as quietly as possible. My eyes went wide but something on the inside told me she was going to help so I just nodded.
The lady sighed and with eyes wandering out of the window, she started telling me a short story.
'When I was twenty I met that guy. So manly, so beautiful and so caring that he seemed like he came our of a fairy tale…’ I smiled a little and in my head the face of Taehyung started appearing. 'He was making me so happy and I thought that I would spend my life with him. Oh,how wrong I was..On the third year of our relationship I found him in the bed with my best friend. Her eyes were shining when she was looking at him and all he had to do to make her blush was to smile. When they saw me staying in front of them, their expressions were completely different: she clasped her hand over her mouth and he…he was just staring at me with a mixture of apology and love as if he was saying sorry to me that he fell inlove with someone else and I had to find out about it like this..'
By this time, I was sobbing a little and wiping my tears. The older woman just continued staring outside with a dreamy look on her face. ‘I was so heartbroked I couldn’t think of anything. I felt stupid for being too scared to find out the truth sooner. I also felt stupid for not being able to make him stay with me. Nobody said anything- I just closed the door and drove away. This was the last time I saw him.’ Finally she looked at me and smiled sadly. ‘And do you know what was the worst of it all? I was engaged to him.’
With this my eyes went wide and without thinking about it I hugged the old lady and cried onto her shoulder. Just before it was time for me to get off the bus, the woman pinched my cheek and whispered. ‘Don’t wait up just because you don’t want to lose him. Time only makes things more difficult.’
That day I stopped being so scared of letting my love go.
'Hey.’ Taehyung waved at me from the kitchen, smiling. I smiled back and he hugged me loosely. I couldn’t even feel his warmness, he did it as if it was something he had to do. Something he was obligated to do. Everything about our relationship seemed worn off and monotone.
'Tae?’ I asked, doing a cute expression. 'Wanna go out today?’
He was a bit surprised but nodded his head. ‘Yeah, sure. I’ll be done with work at four today so we will have plenty of time.’ For a moment he stopped and put his index finger to his lips. ‘Actually..we have to be done by eight because I have to attend a conference.’
I didn’t question it but deep inside I knew that he was going to meet someone.
I knew he was going to love someone else and it was making me crazy but I already told myself to be strong so I had to bear with it.
It’s okay, Y/N…Just bear with it for a bit longer…
'I was thinking…wanna go visit our place?’ He shot his eyes open and smiled melancholically. 'We haven’t gone there for a year already..The last time we went was for your birthday Tae..’
'I remember.’ He answered breathlessly and we both stared at each other and it was enough for us.
It was enough for us to understand each other.
It was enough to make me melt and then break even more.
It was five thirty when we got to our place. Where we first met. It was a little hill in the end of the city with one single tree in the middle of it. It was the best place to watch the fireworks from. Taehyung put his stuff under the tree and so did I. He went to the car and got out a ball. With a childish smile, we started playing volleyball like we used to back in the days.
—————-
'Hey, I’m going to…um pee.’ Tae said and I laughed. Clumsy as always. I nodded and he went ahead.
I layed back onto the tree behind me and breathed in the fresh air. I was going to fall asleep when I beeping sound disturbed me. I opened one eye and saw it was Tae’s phone.
At first I just ignored it because I thought it was a work call but the curiousity was too strong so I grabbed the phone and before I could regret it I touched the screen and opened his messages.
There, I found the proof I’ve been waiting for.
'You remember? Eight, my place ;)’
'Oi, look what you’re gonna get hehe *picture is uploading*’
After that my eyes went wide and I dropped the phone. The face which appeared on the screen was the one of my best friend.
—————
It was already seven so we started packing up. I haven’t spoken to Tae since I saw the photo. He wasn’t speaking as well. I was pretty sure he knew I saw the messages.
And I was also pretty sure that he didn’t know how to react as well so we were both silent.
I got my things and went straight to the car. I was about to open the door when I heard his voice behind me. ‘Wait, Y/N!’
I turned and my heart broke once again. Taehyung stood there, watching me with a mixture of apology and love as if he was apologizing for loving someone else.
He was really tense as if he thought I was going to break down but then I remembered the old lady in the bus and I started laughing as hard as I could.
Tears started running down my face and I dropped to the ground and I realized that my laugh was fading into a cry. A really pained cry, as if a part of me was dying.
Kim Taehyung then dropped onto his knees next to me and hugged me as hard as he could. I started remembering everything we went through together. Our first meeting, our first date, our first kiss, out first night over. It was all too painful to bear so I burried myself into Tae even harder. I grabbed his shirt and I stained it with my tears but I didn’t care. Suddenly the first memory we had together popped into my head.
'Will you love me forever?’ I whispered as quietly as I could.
He smiled and took my hands in his. Without hesitating, under the lights of the fireworks in the night sky, he answered. ‘Always.’
Then it changed and the image of the old lady came up once again.
'Don’t wait up just because you don’t want to lose him. Time only makes things more difficult.’
I understood now. I got up and let go of Taehyung. He was watching me with eyes wide open but got up aswell. We both looked like messes but the feelings were too strong to care.
I straightened up and smiled as wide as I could. He was still speechless. It was time to let go. I brushed past him and when I was far enough so he couldn’t see
me cracking once again, I said ‘You didn’t keep your promise to me.’
I never turned around to see his face again.
